The Karawanken motorway tunnel along the A11 connects Austria and Slovenia. It is the last single-tube tunnel in Austria, and a second tube is now being added.

In 1986 the ground-breaking ceremony took place for the Karawanken motorway tunnel, which is now to be extended by a second tube. The border tunnel connects Austria and Slovenia and shortens the travel time between Villach and Ljubljana for one hour. The tunnel feed takes place from both sides and the existing tube will be completely refurbished after the second one has been completed.

In addition to the two tunnels, a new water protection system was built.
