Gravitational and hydrological natural hazards: A growing challenge

Gravitational and hydrological natural hazards – such as rockfall, rockslides, landslides, avalanches, debris flows, and floods – are becoming increasingly significant for society due to ongoing climate change.

Identification of hazard zones and hazard analysis

Potential hazard zones are initially identified through GIS analyses. Depending on terrain conditions, fieldwork is carried out using state-of-the-art drone technology as well as rope and safety equipment. The collected data serves as the basis for 2D and 3D process simulations (rockfall, flooding, debris flow, and avalanches) to assess in detail the risk to the affected objects (e.g., roads, buildings, etc.). The results are presented as process maps and subsequently converted into intensity maps.

Quantitative risk analysis

Based on the hazard analysis of the respective prevailing natural hazard process type, a risk calculation and assessment is carried out with regard to property and personal risks. If predefined threshold values are exceeded, mitigation measures are developed according to the TOP principle (technical, organizational, and personal protective measures). To clearly identify areas requiring action and prioritization, the results are compiled into risk maps.

Sustainable mitigation planning

If the risk analysis reveals that defined protection goals are not met or acceptable risk levels are exceeded, we develop tailored mitigation options. These measures can be structural or organizational in nature and are always subject to a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis. Our goal: the optimal solution for our clients—economical, effective, and sustainable in the long term.

With this 360-degree approach, we ensure the highest level of safety and support our clients in the sustainable planning and implementation of protective measures.
